Academics

Explore the curriculum, programs, and academic support available to students at Capital City Sports Academy.

Rigorous instruction. Individualized support. The same high standard in the classroom as on the court.

Academics come first at Capital City Sports Academy. Every student in kindergarten through 8th grade receives a double dose of reading and math each day, taught in small groups at their individual level rather than only at grade level. Each spring our students compete in The Blitz™, the award-winning academic program created by Dr. Chad Carr that took a failing Columbus charter school to the #1 ranking in the state within three years. Free tutoring, social-emotional learning, and on-site counseling support round out a program designed to educate the whole child — mind, body, and character.

The Blitz™

The Blitz™ is an award-winning academic program created by Dr. Chad Carr. It was first implemented at Columbus Preparatory Academy, a public charter school that was failing academically by the 2006–07 school year. Within three years, The Blitz™ took Columbus Preparatory Academy from closure status to the #1 ranked public school in the state of Ohio — a position the school held while implementing The Blitz™ from 2010 to 2017.

How The Blitz™ works

The Blitz™ competition runs each spring, during the eight weeks leading up to the Ohio State Test. Students play Blitz™ review games that build familiarity with the vocabulary and structure of state assessments, then compete in a series of academic pep rallies where they:

• Gain confidence in their ability to perform well on the test • Showcase their creative talents during school-wide games • Encourage one another to put forth their best effort academically and behaviorally • Earn rewards for excellence, including a series of field trips based on end-of-year Blitz™ rankings

Schools already know how to make students want to win at sports. The Blitz™ brings that same energy to academics — which is exactly why it belongs at a school like ours.

Double Dose of Reading and Math

Every student receives an additional daily block of reading and math instruction — a double dose — on top of core instruction.

• Delivered in small groups, so instruction meets each student where they are • Taught at the student's level, not just their grade level • Progress is measured throughout the year, not just at the end of it • Students who are ahead are pushed further; students who are behind get ground back

This is the center of our academic program. It is not an intervention offered to some students — it is what every student receives, every day.

Small-Group Instruction

Large-group instruction assumes every child in a grade is in the same place. They aren't. Small-group instruction lets our teachers work with students at their actual level, adjust pace in real time, and catch gaps before they compound.

Social-Emotional Learning

Social-emotional learning is part of the core academic program at Capital City Sports Academy, not a separate assembly or an occasional lesson. Students learn to name what they're feeling, manage frustration, work through conflict, and persist when something is hard — skills that determine whether academic instruction actually lands.

Academic Support

• Free tutoring for every student, at no cost to families • Counseling and emotional support provided on site through NYAP • Small-group instruction built into the daily schedule • Support for students working above and below grade level

Kindergarten

Capital City Sports Academy offers kindergarten early entrance for children who turn five by December 31 — a later cutoff than many Ohio schools.

Our kindergarten is a full school day with movement built in, because five-year-olds are not built to sit still. Kindergartners receive the same double dose of reading and math in small groups, along with free breakfast and lunch, free transportation, and free after-school care.

AMP/edu ecosystem

Powered by AMP/edu

Our school is powered by the AMP/edu ecosystem — a unified, modern learning platform that strengthens classroom instruction and enhances every student's learning experience. AMP brings together curriculum, tools, and resources in one cohesive system, helping teachers deliver engaging, consistent instruction and giving students confidence with a well-supported, high-quality education.

English Language Arts

Our ELA program focuses on building strong readers, writers, and communicators from the earliest grades. Using the Blitz™ Instructional Model, teachers deliver targeted small-group instruction to close gaps and accelerate growth in phonics, vocabulary, and comprehension. Students engage deeply with a range of texts and develop writing skills that support critical thinking and clear expression across all subjects.

Math

Math instruction at Capital Collegiate is designed to develop both foundational fluency and problem-solving confidence. With daily support through the Blitz™ Model, students receive personalized, small-group instruction that builds skills step by step—from basic operations to more advanced reasoning. Emphasis is placed on real-world application, hands-on learning, and progress at each student’s pace.

Science

Science learning comes to life through hands-on activities and inquiry-based exploration. Students investigate life, Earth, and physical sciences while building observation, experimentation, and analysis skills. Lessons are designed to connect science to the real world and encourage curiosity, collaboration, and critical thinking.

Social Studies

In Social Studies, students explore history, geography, civics, and cultures through engaging, interactive lessons. The curriculum emphasizes civic awareness, cultural understanding, and decision-making skills. Students learn to connect past and present and see themselves as active participants in their communities.

Instructional Model

Our school is built on a strong foundation of high expectations for academic achievement for all students. Our instructional model has four key components to achieve strong academic results:

Individualized Instruction

Students participate in a variety of learning activities each day that individualize instruction for each subject area. Students receive whole class instruction, small group instruction, and individual instruction with teachers, technology and other curricular tools.

Properly Certified & Licensed Teachers

Our teachers meet the educator qualification requirements outlined in the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA): Bachelor’s degree, grade-level teaching license/certificate & ability to demonstrate subject area expertise. Our teachers are supported by trainers and participate in continuous, research-based professional development. Our teachers are accountable for student learning and rewarded for high quality performance.

More Time on Task

Our students receive double the instruction in ELA and Math to provide a strong foundation for all learning. Beginning with full-day Kindergarten, our school also follows a longer school day and school year than many other schools.

Short Cycle Assessments

Student knowledge of academic standards is assessed formally and informally in short cycles by each teacher. Our teachers adjust class-level and individual instruction based on student performance in these frequent intervals.
